Welcome back to the “I’m With Q’pid” quilt series! If you’re just jumping into this pattern, be sure to look at the first blog which details what supplies you’ll need, the cutting instructions, and how to create the arrow blocks. Today, we’ll go over pinning your arrow blocks together, creating your heart blocks, and combining it all together to create your quilt.
After you’ve fussy cut the edges, begin by taking two arrow blocks and put the right sides together. Make sure that the arrow shaft tips (bottom of arrow shaft) of the blocks line up. Pin both sides of the seam together, just as you see in the picture below.
Once you’ve gotten your blocks pinned together in proper alignment, sew them together and iron them flat. Sew two more blocks together, and combine the pairs into a four block that should look like the image below.
Watch this short video for the step-by-step instructions to complete the pinning and four arrow block sewing.
Next, you’ll repeat that process seven more times to create the complete border of arrow blocks that should look like this:
Once you’ve completed your border, you can begin your heart blocks. You’ll need to create eight red heart blocks and one pink heart block. The most important part of creating your heart blocks is making certain that you’re keeping your left and right side where they belong. So, we recommend that you first gather your heart block pieces and have them laid out as they are in the image below. It is easier to stay organized when you create one heart block at a time.
With all your pieces laid out, pinning them together will be considerably less taxing! The key to this step is making sure that you’re pinning the correct square size to your 4.25” X 8.25” piece. Follow along with Karla in the video below to see how.
You’re nearly finished! When you’ve completed pinning and sewing your heart blocks together, sew together the blocks for rows 1-5 as pictured below. You’ve now completed piecing together your quilt.
In the third and final installment of the “I’m With Q’pid” blog, we will cover how to embellish your quilt and gain some tips and tricks that Karla picked up along the way in her experimenting with this quilt design.
